The birthplace of surfing in Maranhão: the state circuit runs its heats here, in front of Bar do Nonato. Short, hollow peaks over sand and rock on north to north-east swell from the North Atlantic, mostly December to April. It works only around high tide; the tide range here is several metres, so the beach and the currents change fast. Beginners should paddle out on the rising tide, not the dropping one.
