West-facing sand at Manresa State Beach sits outside the shadow that keeps Santa Cruz small, so it is often overhead when town is flat. It handles most tides, preferring the incoming, and gets very hard to paddle out once it reaches double overhead in winter. Wannasurf's advice is to learn the currents first; on small summer days intermediates can use the rips as a ride back out.
