The Poles, at the north end of Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park next to Naval Station Mayport, is Jacksonville's best-known break: sandbars that favour lefts on a N to NE swell with a west wind, best at low tide on the push. The jetties to the north shelter it, so a messy nor'easter can come out cleaner here. Enter the park (fee), use the north lots and the boardwalk. On small days the beach south of the Poles is easier for learners.
