The spots
Playa Pelada · reef break, intermediate, best on W/NW/SW swell with NE/E wind, mid to high tide. Small cove just north of Guiones with a rocky reef right that needs a solid swell; a calmer alternative when Guiones is busy.
Playa Guiones · beach break, beginner, best on WNW/W/SW swell with ENE/E wind, all tides. A seven-kilometre sandy beach in Nosara with many peaks and gentle, consistent waves, one of the best-known learner beaches in Costa Rica. It works at nearly all tides.
Playa Ostional · beach break, intermediate, best on W/SW/NW swell with E/NE wind, mid to high tide. Long, exposed black-sand beach break north of Nosara inside the turtle refuge; uncrowded and punchy, but it closes out once the swell gets big.
