17 October 2026
Correction, 17 October 2026: an earlier version of this post gave the wrong dates. The WSL event page shows the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal window as 16 to 25 October 2026 at Supertubos, and Round 1 ran on 16 October. When we last looked (the evening of 17 October) it was on standby, with the next call for 18 October at 9:00 Portuguese time. Calls change by the hour, so the WSL page is the only place to trust for whether a day is on.
After Portugal the tour goes to Cloud 9 in the Philippines (31 October to 10 November), then the season finishes at Pipeline in December. Dates are the WSL’s; they can move.
Supertubos is a heavy, shallow beach break. Our guide (four sources, high confidence) agrees with what you will read elsewhere:
The sandbar is the reason the contest is held here, and also the reason the wave is only good on some days. The banks move between swells, so the same beach can be perfect one week and a closeout the next. If you want to see what the bar is doing before you drive, the satellite pictures are the quickest check.
Expect a busy town and a full car park. The wave breaks close to the beach, so the viewing is good, but whether heats run depends on the swell and wind of that morning, not on the calendar. Water temperature around Peniche is about 17 °C in late October (our model average), so a 4/3 is the usual choice for surfing anything nearby.
The peninsula faces both ways, which is the point of Peniche: when the swell is too big or too crowded at one side, the other is often workable.
Check the current numbers on each spot page before you go. The rating is a model estimate, and a day that scores "Fair" on paper can still be worth it if you know the spot.
