At the tip of the Barra de Santiago peninsula, the estuary that drains nine rivers through the mangroves builds big sandbanks that break fast and powerful, then close out as the swell grows. Toward the village the waves are softer: beginners should stay there on a small S swell, away from the bocana current. The turnoff is at km 98.5 of the coastal highway, then 10 km of dirt road.
