The spots
Berawa · reef break, intermediate, best on W/WSW/SW swell with E/ESE wind, all tides. Right-hand reef a few minutes down the beach from Canggu, picking up west and southwest swell with an east wind. Handles all tides and draws a big crowd on the weekend.
Canggu (Batu Bolong) · reef break, intermediate, best on SW/SSW swell with NE/ENE wind, mid to high tide. The main wave of the Canggu strip, with rocky-reef lefts and rights that suit longboards and fun-sized swells. Dry-season mornings are cleanest.
Echo Beach · reef break, intermediate, best on SW/S/W swell with NE/N/E wind, mid to high tide. Canggu's punchiest wave: a fast, often hollow left over reef and sand at the end of Batu Mejan, with a shorter right; low tide exposes the reef.
Seminyak (Blue Ocean) · beach break, intermediate, best on SW/S/W swell with SE/E/ENE wind, mid tide. Sandbar peaks in front of Ku De Ta that work best on a rising mid tide with southwest to west swell. Fast and hollow at times, and the beach crowd means the lineup…
Pererenan · beach break, intermediate, best on SW/W/S swell with NE/N/E wind, mid to high tide. Sand-and-rock peaks just north-west of Echo Beach giving lefts and rights; a busy alternative to the Canggu reefs that holds a fair bit of swell.
Legian (Padma) · beach break, intermediate, best on SW/SSW swell with E/ENE/ESE wind, mid to high tide. Legian sandbanks between Kuta and Seminyak, working on southwest swell with east wind around mid to high tide. Reliable but busy, and it closes out once it gets over…
Kuta Beach · beach break, beginner, best on SW/S swell with E/ENE wind, mid to high tide. The classic Bali beginner beach, a long sandy beach break with soft shoulders and many surf schools. Works on small swell and mid to high tide.
Kuta Reef · reef break, intermediate, best on SW/S swell with ESE/E/SE wind, mid to high tide. Classic left on an outer reef about 800 m off Tuban, usually reached by boat; a long, forgiving wall on most days that gets hollow on bigger swells.
Airport Lefts · reef break, intermediate, best on SW/SSW swell with E/ESE/SE wind, mid to high tide. Coral reef left off the end of the Ngurah Rai runway that wants a proper southwest groundswell, around 1.5 m and up, and a rising mid to high tide. Easterly morning…
Airport Rights · reef break, intermediate, best on SW/SSW swell with E/ESE/SE wind, mid to high tide. The right-hander on the same reef system as Airport Lefts, a few hundred metres further south. Needs the same southwest push and easterly wind; Surf-Forecast rates it…
Jimbaran Beach · beach break, intermediate, best on W/WSW swell with E/ESE wind, all tides. Short, hollow sand-bottom peaks on the west-facing Jimbaran bay, best on a west swell with an east breeze. Few people out during the week.
