Flying with a surfboard on WestJet
Counts as a checked bag · up to 300 cm · 1 board per bag. Fee: Normal checked-bag fee for your fare, plus a 50–59 CAD handling fee per board at the airport, plus an oversize fee for boards over 157 cm (the fees page lists 150–177 for overweight/oversize).
- the board counts as one piece of your checked baggage
- boards accepted when under 3 m (9.8 ft) long
- WestJet's sports page says an oversize fee applies to each board over 62 in (157 cm), so almost every surfboard pays it; some secondary sources say the oversize fee is waived for sports gear, which conflicts
- one set per guest: a surfboard and sail, a surfboard and kite, or a paddleboard and one paddle
- fins (skeg) must be removed and the board padded
- no board-specific weight limit given; standard bags are 23 kg (50 lb) and overweight fees apply above that
- no advance-notice rule, embargo or regional-aircraft limit stated; on partner flights the first operating airline's fees apply
