El Espino runs for about 12 km of sand in front of mangroves, with the San Miguel (Chaparrastique) volcano behind. The best peaks sit at the river mouth on low tide, soft both ways with the odd tube when the banks line up, but the beach does not hold much past 1.8 m. On a small S swell learners can use the gentle whitewater well away from the mouth; there are no lifeguards, so go with someone who knows the beach.
