Wilderness is a long, open Garden Route beach with peaks along its length; the better banks sit at the west end below the cliffs where the N2 runs, with more near the river mouths. South swells of about 1 to 2 m with calm or light north wind work best, at low to mid tide, so mornings are the time. Beginners should pick a small, clean day and surf away from the river mouths.
