Coffee Bay has two waves: sandbar peaks on the beach, best at low tide, and a right point over flat rock on the south side that needs an east-tilted swell and high tide. West to southwest wind blows offshore. The road in from Mthatha is 80 km of potholes and roaming cattle, so arrive in daylight. Backpacker hostels run lessons on the beach break on small days; there are no shark nets anywhere on this coast.
