New Pier is the best and busiest wave on Durban's Golden Mile. South swells bend around the pier into a fast right with tube sections, up to about double overhead, and at higher tides lefts run back toward the pier. West to northwest wind is offshore. Surfers jump off the pier to reach the takeoff, timing the sets on big days. Learners should use the whitewater at North Beach, one pier north.
