At Port Alfred the Kowie River mouth is held by two piers, and East Beach's right peels off the eastern one in south to southwest groundswell. Paddle out close to the pier and let its rip carry you. West to northwest wind is offshore, a falling tide helps, and the wave is hollow and powerful for its size. Summer is often flat, but December and January bring the holiday crowd.
