Across the Rio de Contas from town, the open Atlantic side of the Pontal sandspit has peaks both ways on banks shaped by the river. East to south swell and a west wind make it work, best from low tide on the push. Boatmen at Praia da Coroa take you across in a few minutes. Beginners should stay at Ribeira or Concha instead: the current here runs hard toward the river mouth.
