Long, open sand beach in front of São João, with fewer groynes than the town front and room to spread out. Peaks come and go and are flatter and fatter than further south, which suits improvers, but the rips are strong and winter swell gets heavy. Best on a west swell with an east wind, mid to high tide; the northern end towards Cova do Vapor is the more demanding part.
